I publish an association magazine with a significant b-to-b angle. Recently, our association CEO asked the hypothetical "What is the purpose of a magazine within an association?" I provided my usual pat answers, but I'd like to collect the opinions of those on the forum. What is a magazine's reason for being?

A magazine within an association serves a number of purposes

a) It gives members of the association a forum to express their views
b) It keeps members up to date with the latest news in their field of expertise

A good association b2b magazine relies on good journalists but also on members of the association actively supporting the magazine by writing articles, letters etc.

The CEO should drive this in association with the publisher.
