I wondered if anybody could give me a working definition of what a B2B publication is. The term is used quite frequently in South Africa without any sense of what the criteria are for a B2B publication and it would be very useful if we had something concrete to which to refer. Any ideas?

Wikipedia (if we're to believe it) says:
A trade journal is a periodical, magazine or publication printed with the intention of target marketing to a specific industry or type of trade/business. Trade journals typically contain heavy advertising content focused on the industry in question with little if any "general audience" advertising. They also generally contain industry-specific job notices. Many trade publications can also be considered newsmagazines with a very specific topical focus. In the biological sciences, the boundary between the trade publication and peer reviewed journal has blurred in certain instances, particularly in the biotechnology industry. One example of such a publication is BioTechniques which contains peer reviewed technical reports and technology reviews while containing heavy advertising content, a significant proportion of the articles being authored by or in collaboration with vendors who advertise in the same issue. I think we'd also have to add something about b2b magazines having controlled circ. But then I don't know how you would apply that to b2b websites. |

Not all trade mags have conrolled circ. Another definition is thattrade, business mags help readers in specific industries do their jobs more effectively.

Oh, a definition has to include a circulation element in that they are read by people who work in their respective industries and that they serve as a conduit between their advertisers and readers for business information. But it can be both paid and/or controlled circ., though most are controlled.
