We've had a running debate here for some time. Should business publications allow sources to see or "check" quotes before publication?

Not entire stories, just quotes. It's a request we get a lot, mostly from financial industry sources.

Generally, we decline, but the pressure is pretty constant.

What is your experience?

We allow quote checking so sources can confirm facts and figures. We do not allow them to rewrite or change opinions or points that affect the story.

We allow sources to check quotes when we are running features on the entity. They cannot change editorial copy, but we do allow them to fact-check their own businesses. (We say they have 300 acres, they really meant 310. We will change it.)

They cannot change the scope of the article.
