As you may know, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the Payne
Awards, established at the SOJC by the late Ancil Payne to recognize journalists who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to ethical conduct, even when faced with economic, personal or political pressure. The deadline to submit an entry or nomination for these awards—Friday, February 27, 2009—is fast approaching. If you are aware of any published stories or decisions made within the last year (between January 1 and December 31, 2008) -- by individuals or news organizations -- that fit this description, please let us know by e-mailing payneawards@jcomm.uoregon.edu or by calling Zanne Miller, communications director, at (541) 346-2519. We'll be happy to investigate and/or do the legwork in preparing a nomination. Again, deadline for nominations is Friday, February 27. Thank you for the work that you do every day and for your support of the Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism. Best Regards, Tim Gleason, Edwin L. Artzt Dean P.S. The 2008 Payne Awards will be presented May 15 in Portland as part of the annual Hulteng Conversations In Ethics. Our keynote speaker is Brooke Gladstone, Host of “On the Media.” We are currently putting together a wonderful day of panel discussions on the topic: Journalism in the Future Tense: Reclaiming the Moral Voice. More information will be available at jcomm.uoregon.edu/hulteng in the coming weeks. |
