I'd like to know if there exist guidelines for designing advertisements for trade publications. Training marketing personnel about such guidelines will benefit the client as well the publication.

Yes, there are guidelines. Don't make the ad look like your editorial or any editorial. Because if you do, you have to place the word "advertisement" at the top of the ad prominently so readers can easily see it.

Guidelines should be set in house but there may also be guidelines from industry or regulatory bodies that you need to be aware of.
